UPW (Ultra-Pure Water) Systems Engineer (Chemical or Mechanical Engineer)

Summary:

The UPW Systems Engineer is responsible for sustaining, operations, troubleshooting, repairs, and project coordination for UPW (Ultra-Pure Water) systems in a complex 24/7 manufacturing environment.  The incumbent will also provide ongoing support to technicians who are operating and maintaining the systems.  Must be proficient in the application of structured problem solving principles, and demonstrate the ability to correctly diagnose system troubles and identify rapid appropriate solutions.  A successful candidate must have a strong personal commitment to people and process safety, and the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

Provide Engineering support to technicians that operate and maintain the ultra-pure water systems which support High Volume Manufacturing Facility. Develop all documentation for preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and repairing Reverse Osmosis, Filtration, Ion Exchange, Ultra Violet Light Sterilization, and Analytical equipment and creating the Statistical reports using SPC and JMP software. Performs troubleshooting and engineering support of chemical handling equipment and systems, mechanical, plumbing, hydraulic, and pneumatic. Identifies, investigates, and implements solutions to problems by using available resources for quality repairs and efficient operations. Identify spare parts operations requires for inventory on critical equipment with special attention to cost savings, quality control and minimizing equipment down time.

Responsibilities:

Analyze, develop, improve, and maintain operating UPW system processes to safely function within process specifications.  Implement FMEA approach to process change and design.

Assures system quality and reliability by writing test procedures, work plans and coordinate testing.

Conduct technical reviews of process requirements, specifications, codes, and design.

Coordinates process change management for assigned systems.  Coordinates final acceptance testing for new or modified processes turned over to operating personnel.

Provides technical and engineering information to other functions on the site.  Develops technical reports, papers, and presentations.  Participates in and leads Taskforces.

Oversee the engineering program for assigned systems

Coordinate with Campus Manager, Engineering Manager, Shift Leads and site staff to resource and implement programs.

Develop and document safe and complete maintenance procedures.  Additionally, develop and perform technical training programs for technicians.

Assist in the development of Expense and Capital maintenance plans which would include planning for major maintenance, infrastructure upgrades, equipment replacements and modifications to ensure the site’s capabilities are maintained for the foreseeable future.

Responsible for scoping the design, justification, and execution of major projects performed at the site are properly planned, executed and closed out in accordance with company practices.

Maintain all infrastructure and compliance documentation including up-to-date P&ID drawings and single-lines as well as documentation mandated for the purpose of maintaining regulatory compliance with Federal, State or Local law.

Establish work priorities, assign deliverables and resolve issues with Operations and Project teams, temporary help and/or project-specific dedicated personnel to assure client satisfaction.

Assist with budgetary requests.

Assist with the coordination and scheduling of maintenance activities.

Reads and understands the applicable Service Level Agreements, helps achieve the Key Performance Indicators and scores favorably on the client satisfaction surveys.

Provides facility specific assistance to project management teams as needed or requested.

Provide support to the site staff with the coordination and scheduling of maintenance activities.

Ensures appropriate follow up with customers, and conducts post-project critiques.

Seeks to continuously improve processes, systems and overall client satisfaction.

Provides direction/information to vendors, facilities staff, and service providers to ensure excellent coordination/execution of work within client environment with minimal disruption.

Assists in preparing project and departmental budgets

Knowledge and Personal skills:

The UPW Systems Engineer must have knowledge of industry standards, troubleshooting skills, project management capabilities, and the ability to read, interpret, and create engineering drawings and equipment specifications (Chemical or Mechanical Engineer).

The UPW Systems Engineer must consistently demonstrate:

The ability to work cooperatively with technicians, supervisors, engineers, and managers.

Ability to do complex problem solving, identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.

Computer skills including the ability to operate corporate email, spreadsheets, word processing, and engineering drawing databases at a highly proficient level.  AutoCAD proficiency preferable.

Capable of working independently and exhibit effective time management skills.

Willingness and ability to work extended hours when needed for business purposes, or to be called-in to work in the event of emergency or business needs.

Contributes recommendations and suggestion for work method improvements, and safety.

Personal attributes should include honesty, trustworthiness, respect for others, flexibility, and sound workplace ethics

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering is required.

Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering is a plus

One to Five years’ experience in facilities operations, and maintenance is required.

One to Five or more years’ experience working in an Industrial setting is highly preferred.

Working knowledge of manufacturing plant utility systems is highly preferred, RO & DI water

Familiar with computer equipment, and capable of operating or learning specialized computer software systems.

Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License.

Experience in Water / Purification/ Ultra-Pure water operations.

Minimum of 3-5 years of related UPW work experience.

David H. Paul UPW certification or equivalent would be an added advantage Facilities maintenance experience.

Physical Requirements:

The Ultra-Pure Water Systems Engineer may spend extended hours working inside and outside in all weather conditions, and in awkward body positions which can cause physical discomfort and strain.  The Systems Engineer will be required to regularly lift up to 50 lbs.  Foreseeably the position will come in contact with sharp, hot, and very cold supplies equipment, and parts.  Visual acuity with normal color perception.

Sensory demands include exposure to the smells and sounds characteristic of an industrial work environment.  The UPW Systems Engineer must have the ability to safely climb ladders, work at elevation from ladders, scaffolding, lifts, roofs or platforms, and the ability to work in confined spaces.  While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, handle, or feel, reach with hands or arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
