Responsibilities

Materials Engineer

Northville

Position Summary: This candidate will provide materials and metallurgical expertise regarding ZF products including but not limited to chassis components, transmissions, axle drives, and torque converters. The position requires strong communication and customer service skills, hands-on laboratory experience with materials testing, and knowledge of global automotive specifications and test methods.

Position Responsibilities:

Prepare samples and perform material and metallographic evaluations based on customer, application, and Engineering requirements.

Knowledge of materials characterization and failure analysis of automotive components is required.

Failure analysis and root cause determination of development, production, and warranty issues relating to material properties.

Offer input to Engineering groups on material selection, development, processing, and heat treatment.

Assist in laboratory testing of materials to show conformance to specifications, or special testing and evaluations as needed.

Generate technical reports documenting laboratory findings, meet with engineering groups to discuss material topics, interact with suppliers as required, and review drawings and specifications for accuracy/completeness.

Quality monitoring based on analysis of test data.

Heat treatment and testing of steel mill heat samples according to ZF specifications.

Support for internal customers in case of problems during steel processing.

Instruction of steel makers with regards to ZF quality and processes including lab and steel mill audits.

Coordinate materials testing with third-party internal and/or external materials laboratories.

Ability to work with multi-cultural cross-functional teams.

Contribute to a safe laboratory work environment.

Perform other duties as assigned

Essential Skills and Experience:

Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science Engineering, or Metallurgical Engineering

5-6 years in laboratory and materials testing experience with 2 years heat treating or metals processing experience

High level of knowledge of steel properties, heat treatment, and processing

High level of knowledge of sample preparation, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, metallography, hardness testing, chemical analysis, and supporting testing/methods

Familiarity with casting, powder metal, forming, welding, wear, and corrosion and non-destructive testing topics.

Experience with polymers/elastomers, corrosion, oil/grease, friction/wear, cleanliness testing, joining technology, and non-destructive testing (radiography, magnetic particle, eddy current) is desirable.

Candidate must have strong ferrous and non-ferrous metals experience including steel processing (forging, rolling, heat treating), powder metal, die cast aluminum, welding, and coatings/plating.

Proficient with oral and written English

Preferred Skills and experience:

Master's degree in Engineering

Experience in the Automotive industry

German and/or Spanish language skills

Strong analytical skills to both determine the source of a problem and recommend courses of action
