ENGINEERING MANAGER (ELECTRONICS)','1901553','!*!Position Purpose:

The Engineering Manager, Level 2 is responsible to build, lead, and improve an engineering organization which is responsible to design, develop, validate, improve and/or support products, systems or applications.  The Engineering Manager is responsible for leading a team of 8-12 electrical engineers, analysts and technical experts in the Aerospace Electronics COE. The manager will provide supervision, planning, development and execution on projects, programs, and continuous improvement initiatives. Responsibilities include managing NPI, IR&D and sustaining engineering for Engine and Actuation Control Systems applications. The right candidate will have experience managing diverse teams of engineers from different disciplines, across multiple geographies.  The role requires strong interpersonal skills, working effectively with other leaders in an Integrated Product Team (IPT) to formulate and execute strategies for a world-class electronics organization. Preferred experience includes leadership of continuous improvement and NPI aerospace electronics programs, using a Product Life Cycle, Agile Scrum and Lean methodologies.  The incumbent generally reports to an Engineering Director or Site Leader and is relied upon to provide a high level of technical expertise in guiding design efforts, customer interactions, and other engineering related matters such as quality problem solving.


Essential Functions:

Drive robust design culture through continuous systemic improvements

Responsible for creating, maintaining and improving design standards that result in high quality and compliant products

Conceives and implements continuous improvement initiatives in his or her group to improve product development velocity and cost efficiency

Supports CAC, the root cause determination and/or corrective action of current or NPI quality issues (escapes, NCR's, etc.) where design support is required (ECR's, Analysis, Test) and drives lessons learned into future designs

Develops, maintains, and improves a highly effective and well skilled staff to carry out actions to complete planned objectives

Utilizes the talent management system

Completes review process and salary planning

Maintains and executes a training matrix

Appropriately staffs the group to meet business demands and objectives

Develops budget to support profit planning activities and manages within the approved budget constraints to support achievement of the company's profitability objectives

Utilizes his or her group as well as the full extended enterprise to improve the customer-perceived value of products through the use of structured and best practice methods (risk analysis, Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), Lean, dimensional analysis, formal problem solving, DOE, Taguchi, etc.). Anticipates, identifies and resolves project risks

Possesses and provides technical product expertise to the extended enterprise (Suppliers, CoE, Customers, Sales & Marketing, and other divisions) as required to support the growth of the business

Assigns resources as required to IPT's or other requirements as needed

Looks for and drives new proven technologies and concepts into current design practices in an effort to provide design solutions that are significantly more competitive

Other Functions:

Assures leverage of all Woodward groups and assets

Develops and maintains training matrix for his or her group

Responsible for goal flowdown from the Corporate level to actionable activities

Supports other groups or segments within Woodward with expertise and manpower to the extent possible when critical situations arise

May author and/or approve organizational documents and operating procedures

May attend external events, such as trade shows, conferences, etc. to seek out, evaluate and deploy new methods to improve the company's overall competitiveness

May participate on committees to the extent required (such as innovation and patent committees)

May directly manage Project Managers/Coordinators to carryout the PLC process

Working Environment / Physical Activities:

Work is generally performed in a normal office environment; however, the job will take him/her into various areas of the plant where there is a possible exposure to noise, chemicals, dust and temperature variations.

Up to 10% domestic/international travel may be required.

Good knowledge of WISE and other related Woodward Business Systems

Significant technical toolbox (trade-studies, brainstorming, design evaluation matrices, risk management, CAD systems, CAE systems, test methods and systems, configuration management, ECR management, DFMEA, GD&T, or other appropriate design and analysis tools)

Ability to coach, mentor, and motivate individuals to perform beyond their comfort zone

Superb risk management skills for robust design

Strong understanding of financial analysis tools

Good strategic thinking skills (specifically relating to the corporate strategic planning and execution)

Education or Formal Training:

4 year technical/science degree or International equivalent required

Masters, PhD or International equivalent preferred

Greenbelt or Blackbelt experience preferred

Champions training required within 1 year

Experience Required:

8-12 years engineering experience in an identical or closely related field

Proven track record growing, leading and managing a team to high performance standards.

Excellent people management and leadership skills, and a consistent track record of mentoring and coaching team members.

Lean experience preferred
