The Senior Design Engineer is responsible for participating in a cross-functional team to design, develop, and test new and cutting edge fitness products. The incumbent is expected to develop mechanical components and technology strategies for new products that meet and exceed customer requirements.
SCOPE OF POSITION
Develops new fitness products and makes improvements to existing products. Develops and evaluates products and components for cost, reliability and customer expectations to ensure product excellence. Provides mentorship, guidance and review of other design engineer's work. Performs a variety of tasks requiring creativity and the ability to work both independently and with others.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Develops procedures and processes that lead to reliable designs.
Understands and uses the philosophy and tools of total quality, lean manufacturing, and design for manufacturability and serves as an engineering resource in teaching the use of these tools to others within the department.
New Product Development:
Researches and develops core technologies required by Precor to sustain or improve its competitive lead.
Designs, develops, analyzes and documents product designs which meet the functional, cost, reliability, manufacturability and safety requirements of Precor.
Acquires and applies skills necessary to design, develop and introduce new products with the greatest possible design margins and in the shortest amount of time.
Identifies, quantifies, and implements tools, methods, processes and equipment which improve the quality, reliability and productivity of the department.
Communication and Leadership:
Effectively communicates information to co-workers, customers and suppliers which they require to do their jobs.
This communication must be objective and accomplished in a neutral to positive manner.
Serves as the project team leader throughout the initial phases of the New Product Introduction process, defining schedules, assigning tasks and quantifying progress against project goals.Serves as a mentor to other engineers within the company, helping them develop their design, analysis and problem solving skills.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Product Design Engineering.Advanced degree highly desirable.
Experience:
Minimum 6 years of product design/engineering experience, including the use of standard mechanical engineering analysis and software (i.e. FEA, kinematics and tolerance analysis).
Experience in design for manufacturability and assembly.
Experience with the design and manufacture of plastic molded parts.
Experience with the design and manufacture of sheet metal, bent tube and welded components.
Ability to analyze components and assemblies for static strength and fatigue life.
Ability to use industry standard CAD systems for solid modeling and surfacing, design and documentation.
Ability to correctly use standard test and measurement equipment to quantify design margins and problems.
Ability to identify, quantify, and permanently resolve problems.
Ability to handle simultaneous tasks in an environment which can be stressful at times.
Ability to use Windows based PC's and standard software applications including Excel and Word.
Ability to positively communicate with customers (internal and external), to address their needs promptly and to follow through on commitments.
Ability to establish technical standards, methods and priorities.Ability to communicate plans, projects and capabilities to Senior Management.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Works in normal office conditions.
Occasional work in assembly process areas.
Occasional work in mechanical model shop.
Occasional external customer interface
Travel, both domestic and foreign, required (3-4 trips per year).
