EssentialDuties/Responsibilities (may include, but are not limited to):
Under general supervision, applies principles and theories of nuclear engineering and science to government or commercial projects concerned with release, control, and utilization of nuclear energy, nuclear waste disposal, environmental cleanup of nuclear facilities and remediation activities.
Designs develops and tests nuclear equipment and systems.
Conducts research on new materials of special interest in nuclear reactors.
Conducts studies related to the detection and control of radiation and radioactive contaminants.
Studies nuclear fuel cycle to define the most economical uses of material and safest means of waste products disposal.
Conducts research and analyses on issues and problems associated with operation of nuclear-related facilities with regard to radiation transport modeling, statistical analysis, performance metrics, radiation protection, worker safety, environmental protection, conduct of operations, technical qualifications and training, operations oversight, environmental restoration and quality assurance.
Recommends various technology options or approaches for system, processes, facility or program improvements in terms of safety, performance, efficiency or costs.
Performs field engineering tasks and provides technical support for on-site tests and experiments.
Participates in field inspections, reviews, evaluations and assessments of project tasks, such as design and construction activities.
Knowledge of fundamental principles, concepts and techniques in nuclear engineering.
Skill and ability to perform moderately complex professional tasks under general supervision and guidance.
Ability to organize own work independently in order to meet established objectives, using discretion in performing duties.
Level of language skills, mathematical skills, communication skills, reasoning ability and computer skills necessary to perform essential functions of the job.
Travel may be required.
Must have a valid driver’s license.
Must be able to obtain and maintain and a government security clearance.
Must be a US citizen.
Education and Experience Required:
Bachelor of Science degree in Nuclear Engineering (ABET accredited) and 0 years’ experience.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
General and Radiation Physical Required.While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear and must be able to use vertical or inclined ladders. 20% of the work may involve kneeling, stooping and standing. The employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles and outside weather conditions. Regular exposure to work in high places and around moving machinery and vibration can be expected.
The noise level may be loud due to equipment and machinery in use. 90% of these tasks will be working in an office environment, but also may include work in/on ship environment and at a computer work station on board ship. The employee will exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force to move objects. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit and climb ladders and stairways, use hands to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.
