Profile

Description:

Plymouth Electron Microscopy Centre (PEMC) has a vacancy for a full time, electron microscopy technician. PEMC is a core facility within the University of Plymouth, supporting teaching, research and industrial collaborations. We have a range of electron microscopes (SEM, TEM & FIB-SEM) equipped with an array of analytical techniques (EDS, WDS, EBSD, STEM & CL), as well as dedicated sample preparation equipment for both life and physical sciences, and engineering. This post sits within an interdisciplinary team of dedicated electron microscopists whom support teaching, research and development within the Faculty of Science & Engineering, as well as the wider University and our partner colleges. Our technical specialists perform essential roles supporting and enabling both students and staff in one-to-one and whole group settings, maintaining and developing a range of electron microscopes and sample preparation equipment, and working with industrial or commercial partners. Working closely with colleagues, our technical specialists share their knowledge with others, helping them to develop their ideas and fulfilling their academic potential. This post focuses on supporting our colleagues and partners in both analytical scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM), working directly with industry through our EU-funded ‘Plymouth Materials Characterisation Network. You will therefore have a first degree in a related scientific or engineering discipline, and demonstrable practical experience of electron microscopy (including FIB-SEM) in either a research or industrial environment. You will also have a clear drive to develop your microscopy skills within our facility, and a desire to work alongside colleagues to develop a research profile within your field. Please demonstrate how you meet the essential criteria outlined in the knowledge, qualifications, training and experience elements of the job description in your supporting statement.
