Job Description:

Shell is taking significant action to strengthen its position as a leading energy company that will thrive in the transition and electrification of the global energy system. The Research Engineer Energy Storage is an excellent opportunity to provide support for the development of technologies that are relevant to Shell’s renewables and sectoral decarbonization ambitions. There is a strong focus on the integration of renewable power across multiple technologies (e.g. solar PV, onshore wind, offshore wind, storage), as well as key power and heat loads (e.g. storage, industrial electrification, electrolyzers, EV chargers, aggregated building loads).

Where you fit in -

The energy transition requires the development of new business opportunities, together with technology and favorable economics to deploy scalable technologies and solutions that enable deep electrification of energy systems. The Research Engineer Energy Storage is an exciting position that will advance mid-term and near-term R&D projects in energy storage, as a means to leverage Shell’s integrated footprint and preserve value for the growing power business.

The Research Engineer Energy Storage will belong to the power technology organization within Shell Projects & Technology. The organization includes a wide range of expertise in energy storage, offshore wind, electrification, and electric mobility. The team undertakes research and development to develop new opportunities in electrical energy storage for the Shell group, with focus on energy storage that can be economically deployed at large scales, with improved performance for use in multiple sectors.

What is the Role -

This person will be responsible for screening, evaluating, developing and demonstrating new technologies for low cost, long discharge duration, GWh-scale storage that can be coupled to electrified industrial processes to manage intermittency of renewable power and provide process flexibility for highly-electrified process technologies.

More specifically, your role will include:

Identifying new storage technologies that will be available and suitable to facilitate process electrification

Delivering lab & pilot projects, often in multi-party collaborations

Maintaining competitive landscape information, including cost and performance characteristics of commercially available storage technologies.

Defining key energy storage product characteristics and performance criteria for process electrification applications

Maintaining strong focus on product and process safety towards development and deployment of new storage technologies

Representing Shell in external technical organizations

Contributing to results published in internal technical reports, conference presentations, and patent filings

Developing understanding of the broader energy system, the energy transition, and the role of emerging storage technologies in Shell’s electrification ambitions

Establish working knowledge of techno-economic analysis to place technology developments in appropriate context

Skills & Requirements

What we need from you -

Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.

At least a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical, chemical, or mechanical engineering. MS or PhD is preferred.

Minimum of four (4) years experience working on energy storage technology.

Demonstrated commitment to HSSE

Effective relationship management with technical and non-technical collaborators (internal &/or external)

Awareness of a variety of energy storage technologies and the role of energy storage in electrification

Awareness in product design and prototyping (physical and computational)

Experience in demonstration and deployment of new technologies, especially for power infrastructure or renewables development

Working knowledge of IP considerations

Understanding of systems engineering concepts is a plus

In addition to deep technical knowledge, team members should possess a strong learning focus, creativity, and persistence. A range of experiences, strengths, and skills will be sought.
