Job Description:

What's the role -

The Process Engineer provides process engineering support to the 24x7 Production organization, to ensure excellence in Process Safety, Reliability, Margin/Energy Optimization, and Cost Management. The role works closely with the Production Specialist and other members of the Production Team to provide technical assurance to unit operations and ensure production plan delivery. In addition, the role plays a key role in Continuous Improvement, Project Development, Non Routine Maintenance and Turnaround Planning and Execution.

The Process Engineer is expected to:

Demonstrate a commitment to the Core Values: Value and Respect for all People, Act with Integrity, Maintain Customer Focus and Act for the Good of the Enterprise.

Be a proactive participant in the Utilities Production Team, working closely with Operations, Maintenance, Inspection and the other Engineering disciplines to ensure thorough and complete communication of process issues to the team.

Play an integral role in unit troubleshooting, taking the lead when necessary to facilitate problem resolution when the problem encountered is technical in nature and requires a Process Engineer's knowledge and expertise.

Utilize analytical skills and production experience in supporting root cause analysis and selection of technology for improvements.

Provide leadership in the identification of key process variables and in establishing safe upper and lower limits of those variables. This should be done with input from Operations, Inspection and the other Engineering disciplines.

Identify opportunities to improve unit safety, environmental performance, reliability, cost, energy usage and profitability and develop those opportunities as resources allow or escalate awareness of the opportunity and seek additional resources as appropriate.

Participate in unit PHAs, Bow Ties, and CCD Reviews and when appropriate, lead Management of Change (MOC) reviews. Develop recommendations to mitigate the identified threats.

Assure timely completion of assigned action items (PHA, etc.)

Utilize Risk Based Decision Making skills in prioritizing work and communicating incentive to Management and to the Production Team.

Work closely and effectively with P&T Specialists and other discipline experts.

Keep Process Engineering and Production Management apprised of problematic unit conditions and issues as they arise.

Maintain and improve the Process Engineering Proactive Technical Monitoring plan for the area for which they are responsible.

Perform proactive technical monitoring to understand process unit performance, troubleshoot operating issues, and identify opportunities for improvement. This key OSE activity is an input for multiple work processes.

Maintain proactive monitoring variables, trends, tools and overall unit proactive monitoring plan to facilitate performance of the Ensure Safe Production (ESP) process.

Spend appropriate time in field in order to maintain good awareness of operating issues and concerns.

Assure complete documentation of key technical work.

Assist the Production Team training console operators on heat and material balances, control of processes, and other unit operations.

Serve as a unit representative on site-wide teams as required.

Provide backup technical support to other unit support engineers at Norco.

Dimensions:

The role provides technical support and assurance to the Utilities Team and delivers improvements to efficiency via capital project support, troubleshooting and unit optimization. The Process Engineer for Utilities is responsible to:

Mentor other less experienced staff to improve the technical understanding of the larger organization.

Develop improvements to the Norco Utilities units to improve site profitability/cost optimization/energy efficiency.

Manage the daily technical monitoring of the units.

Document monthly Unit Monitoring Reports for unit issues and improvement opportunities.

Own and maintain the Proactive Technical Monitoring plans.

He/she provides support for a variety of inter-departmental activities such as CCD reviews, Project design and process support during outages and upsets.

This position interfaces with stakeholders at all levels of the Norco facility. Interpersonal skills, negotiating skills, networking ability and ability to manage multiple interfaces with varying needs and priorities are critical to success in this position. The successful candidate must manage time and resources in an effective and efficient manner. They must understand the impact of decisions on production, operability, safety, reliability and economics.

Reports to the Process Engineer Team Lead

The role does not include direct reports. It does require delivery of site goals through influence.

Works a day staff schedule

Extra hours may be required

Some travel may be required

Additional Information:

This position will support Production through extra hours on nights and weekends during outages and upsets.

Skills & Requirements:

What we need from you -

The ideal candidate should have:

Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.

Minimum of 7 years of experience in design/manufacturing including refining, chemicals and/or integrated gas.

Chemical Engineering degree or equivalent required.

Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis.

Must have a TWIC card or the ability to get one.

Knowledge in Utility processes, including boiler feed water treatment / Boilers.

Strong analytical skills and demonstrated troubleshooting capabilities.

Demonstrated safety leadership.

Good understanding of Utility processes in general.

Strong communication skills are essential. Must be able to work with a diverse group of people from varying disciplines and backgrounds. Teamwork is essential to success in this role.

Working knowledge of process control systems and theory.

Lead key studies, projects and improvement activities for Utilities.

Background in new technology deployments and implementing technologies.
