Environmental EngineersMaking the World a Safer, Cleaner Place

Before anyone ever heard the term ''going green'' there were environmental engineers. Modern environmental engineering began in London in the middle of the 19th century. During those dark days many inhabitants of the growing metropolis were suffering from waterborne diseases like Cholera. Then a young engineer by the name of Joseph Bazalgette was hired to create the world's first major sewer system. In time the city also introduced water and sewage treatment facilities, which brought clean water to the masses and virtually eliminated waterborne diseases.

Although what those early engineers were able to do was truly an awesome feat, the environmental problems we must deal with today are far more daunting. These days our environmental problems are not simply relegated to one city or region, they are global. Air pollution is air pollution in New York City or Beijing. We must also confront the problem of waste disposal due to increasing pollutions.

The myriad of problem we now confront have made engineering jobs, especially in environmental engineering some of the most sought after in the industry today. When it comes down to it, every citizen wants to play their part to make the world a safer, cleaner place for their children and successive generations. And engineers are no different.

When it comes to environment engineer jobs, professionals are more focused on improving the environment then they are about completing a structure or building. It is their primary object to create healthy land, air and water for both human beings and every other living organism. Oftentimes this calls for those in engineer career to remediate polluted sites. This simply means that they clean and test formerly polluted sites to make certain that high levels of pollution are now within acceptable ranges.

Environmental engineering jobs also include waste disposal and recycling. But probably the most important single thing an environmental engineer does is to search for threats to public health. In fact, a large part of their time is spent conducting hazardous waste management studies that will tell them the effect of specific pollutants on the environment. If they find that a particular area is polluted, environmental engineers immediately recommend treatment. These studies also help engineers to establish guidelines and regulations with the hope that they will prevent future incidents.

In addition to dealing with issues on a local level, an environment engineer career may also allow you to confront larger, global issues like acid rain, ozone depletion and global warming. As a way to deal with these issues head on, many environmental engineers end up studying environmental law. This gives them the ability to take advantage of their technical expertise and to try to change things for the better.

Environmental engineer careers are the perfect fit for young people who want to make a difference in their community and even their world. They offer interesting and exciting work and combine that with a history of moral responsibility. In fact, environmental engineers are guards against corporate pollution and also work hard to protect public health. It is no wonder why environmental engineering jobs are so highly prized.
