Urethane moldings and trim pieces are made by pouring a liquid that expands and solidifies inside a mold. Although it is more expensive than wood, urethane millwork and moldings require less installation time.

  • One benefit of urethane millwork is that it is practically maintenance-free once installed. It will not rot, warp or split like wood trim and doesn’t require sanding and priming.
  • Certain molding profiles come with inside and outside comers that eliminate the need for precision mitering. The only cuts made are simple square ones that cut the molding to length.
  • Unlike wood, urethane millwork installs to the wall with fasteners and adhesive. Fasteners are countersunk about 1/8 inch deep and filled with soackle.
  • Molding may be painted with a quality latex or oil-based paint. It’s impervious to moisture, so painted surface are not subject to the degree of chipping and peeling common with wood molding.
