Lead paint hazard

Before 1978, paints containing high levels of lead were used in many houses. Even small amounts of dust or chips of paint containing lead can be a health hazard.

  1. Contact the Environmental Protection Agency at www.epa.gov or local authorities for guidance on how to remove lead-based paint safely.

  2. Lead-based paint in good condition, however, does not present a problem and should not be removed unless appropriate measures are followed.

  3. Do not remove lead paint yourself. To permanently remove lead hazards, you must hire a lead "abatement" contractor.

  4. Keep areas where children play as dust-free and clean as possible.

  5. Babies have less hand-to-mouth activity than toddlers, who might place dust-covered toys or soil containing lead in their mouths.

  6. If your house has lead pipes, use only cold water from the tap for drinking and cooking. Boil cold water if hot water is needed for cooking.

  7. Flush standing water out of the pipes. Run cold water from the faucet until the water is noticeably colder, usually about 20 seconds.
